Sikkim State University has only two departments and 46 students to show since 2018

Promises of devoted campus, resources remain undelivered: Students

PANKAJ DHUNGEL
GANGTOK: Students from Sikkim State University have questioned the Education department as well as the State government on their seriousness with regards to the university established in 2018.
Since its inception, the State university functions inside the premises of Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College here at Tadong with two departments Nepali and Sanskrit with a student count of only 46. The State government’s promise of transferring the university with a devoted campus in Soreng at the former EILLM University campus and at Sanskrit College in Samdong, South Sikkim has remained undelivered.
Addressing the media at Press Club of Sikkim on Thursday, a group of students of the Sikkim State University highlighted: “During the inauguration on August 24, 2018 by the then Education minister RB Subba, there were promises of 10 departments coming up for post-graduation. But in two years, there are still the initial two departments of Nepali and Sanskrit and the number of students have substantially decreased to a mere 46 students currently. There have been no concern and no addition to any other infrastructural development such as libraries and other facilities have not been upgraded", stated the students.
On November 11, 2019, the ruling SKM government laid the foundation stone for the university campus to be developed in Soreng with promises of an alternative campus in the former EILLM University premises by December. The students further claimed that they have submitted applications to Chief Minister P.S. Golay and as well as a memorandum to Education minister Kunga Nima Lepcha on two occasions, but no action have been taken with regards to the issue.
“A university cannot function from within a few rooms in a building. There are no work being done for development of the university premises but even more alarming than that is majority of the students and parents in the State are not aware of the existence of Sikkim State University. The lack of awareness has prompted many of the students to cancel their enrolment to the university as well as the professors who come and go, knowing that the university perhaps doesn’t have a future", stated a student of Nepali department.
The students also highlighted how Vice Chancellor Gopal Kumar Nirola is the only recognized appointment as an official at the university. “Since the appointment of VC, there have been no other appointments like a registrar to the university or a dean or any other appointments. Even the VC has admitted that neither the university is being allowed to function independently nor has it been assured of any support by the State government. Much worse, we are yet to receive any of our formal mark-sheets from the university being a UGC-recognized university", stated the students.
The Sikkim State University which was established as an alternative to Sikkim Central University was at a point of time termed as a 'great accomplishment and development of the State in the education sector'. Now, the students point out barely anyone in the State knows of its existence and record their concerns regarding their future since the government is not taking the State university with seriousness.
