Cricket ground inauguration, tournament postponed

SE Report
GANGTOK: The much-awaited opening of Mining Cricket Ground has been postponed amid the coronavirus fears. Sikkim Cricket Association’s official communiqué confirmed the update and added that the opening of their official cricket ground will be rescheduled for a later date.
“Based on our concern for the safety of the people of Sikkim it has been decided that the opening of the Sikkim Cricket Association Ground is to be cancelled…,” the SICA statement read.  The Mining Cricket Ground, near Rangpo, is the first and only venue in Sikkim worthy of hosting First Class cricket matches. The ground, after the completion of the first phase of work under which construction of pitches, outfield and drainage system were taken up, was due to be inaugurated on April 5.
It is learnt that the Chief Minister P.S Golay, who was scheduled to formally inaugurate the ground, advised SICA to postpone the event after having considered various factors in regard to the COVID-19. The advice of the Chief Minister to postpone the event given the current scenario is one that SICA also full handedly agrees and abides with, the SICA said.
The ground opening, as planned, was a large-scale event with guests from various parts of the country and within Sikkim expected to attend. On SICA’s decision to postpone the landmark opening of the cricket ground, SICA president Lobzang G. Tenzing, in a press statement, said: “Not holding a community event such as ground opening can have cascading effects; it could potentially prevent chances of the introduction of such diseases (coronavirus) in Sikkim. Therefore on the advice of the Chief Minister, we are more than happy to act and take necessary precautionary measures to help prevent the spread of the virus.”
