Bista asks State to provide land for Bagdogra airport upgrade

PRASHANT ACHARYA
BAGDOGRA: Darjeeling Lok Sabha MP Raju Bista on Monday asked the West Bengal government to allocate about 105 acres of land to Airport Authority of India (AAI) for upgradation of Bagdogra airport into a world class facility.
Bista who a chaired a meeting of the advisory committee at Bagdogra said, “We discussed at length about improving convenience and services for the people at the airport. With increasing tourists and air traffic, Bagdogra airport needs expansion at the earliest. Today, the airport is handling 30 lakh passengers, which is way beyond the 7.5 lakhs capacity of the airport.”
The meeting was attended by Congress MLA Shankar Malakar, Bagdogra airport director Subramanium P, the airport director and other officials.
Subramanium informed that the AAI has already taken up the upgradation work within the limited space. However, to upgrade the airport into a world-class facility, the State government needs to allocate about 105 acres of land to the AAI.
Bista said, “I am hopeful that the government will rise above politics and expedite the process of handing over the land as the expansion is for the larger benefit of the people and development of the North Bengal region as a whole.”
Discussion was also held about preparedness with regards to Corona Virus outbreak and how to tackle such emergencies.
Since this region lies in close proximity with China, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, we need to upgrade the facilities to meet the requirements for any emergencies, Bista said.
